The DTF Vancouver Artwork Checklist: Get It Right Before You Upload

The most common source of print issues isn't the printer — it's the file. Here's how to prepare artwork that comes back exactly the way you designed it.

The checklist

File format

PNG with a transparent background is the standard. We also accept PDF, AI, and PSD. JPEG works for photos but compresses poorly at edges — avoid JPEG for logos and text. If in doubt, PNG.

Resolution

300 DPI at the exact size you want printed. If your design will be pressed at 4" wide, your file should be 1,200 pixels wide (4" × 300 DPI). Do not upscale a 72 DPI web graphic to 300 DPI — it will look blurry. Start from the original high-resolution source file.

Background

Transparent, not white. A white background will print as a white rectangle on your garment. If your design has a white background in Photoshop or Canva, delete it before exporting. In Photoshop: select the background and delete. In Canva: turn off the background toggle before downloading as PNG.

Colour mode

RGB is preferred for DTF. CMYK files are accepted but our printers convert to RGB internally — submitting in RGB gives you the most accurate colour match. For brand-critical colour, add a Pantone reference in your order notes and we'll do our best to match.

Sizing

Submit at exact print dimensions. No excess canvas around the design. A 3"×3" logo should be a 900×900 pixel PNG file, not a 3"×3" design floating in an 8.5"×11" canvas. The extra canvas is wasted film you pay for.

Text

Convert all text to outlines/paths before exporting. If you're sending an AI or PSD file, embed fonts or outline them — we can't guarantee font rendering otherwise. PNG exports don't have this issue since text is already rasterized.

Fine details

Minimum recommended line weight is 0.5pt for legibility. Text smaller than 6pt may not reproduce cleanly depending on the design. If you have very fine details, run a small test print before committing to a large run.

Common mistakes

White background included (most common). Low-resolution file upscaled in Photoshop. Design sized incorrectly (too small or too large for intended press location). Excess canvas increasing sheet cost. These are all easy to catch before uploading — run through this checklist before you submit.
