DTF transfers bond to almost any fabric — but "almost any" isn't the same as "all equally well." Here's what you need to know before pressing.
DTF transfers work on cotton, polyester, poly-cotton blends, tri-blends, nylon, spandex, denim, and canvas. They don't work on waterproof or coated fabrics (the adhesive can't penetrate the membrane). They also perform differently on textured fabrics like fleece — the transfer adheres fine, but fine details can look slightly rougher than on flat-knit fabric.
Gildan 5000: The workhorse. 100% preshrunk cotton, 185 gsm. DTF bonds excellently. Affordable, widely available in Canada through S&S and Alphabroder. Great for corporate runs and sports team gear where cost per unit matters.
Bella+Canvas 3001: 100% Airlume combed cotton, 145 gsm. Softer hand feel than the Gildan 5000. DTF looks crisp on this blank and the softness of the shirt elevates the finished product. Preferred for retail-quality branded apparel.
Gildan 64000 (Softstyle): Ring-spun cotton, 153 gsm. A middle ground between the 5000 and the Bella. DTF performs well. Popular for restaurant and hospitality uniforms.
Gildan 18500: 50/50 poly-cotton blend. Great for DTF. The blend means DTF adhesive grips both fibre types. Affordable and durable — popular for school spirit wear and team hoodies.
Independent Trading SS4500: Mid-weight fleece hoodie, 80/20 cotton-poly. DTF performs well on the body panels. Avoid pressing over pocket seams as heat distribution is uneven there.
Polyester performance wear (soccer jerseys, running shirts, athletic polos) works well with DTF. Press temp is the same — 280°F, 10 seconds — but do a peel test on a sample before committing to a full run. Some performance fabrics with moisture-wicking treatments can occasionally affect adhesion on the second cure press.
Waterproof jackets and rain gear with DWR coatings. Neoprene. Leather and faux leather. Heavily textured fabrics like sherpa or cable-knit — the transfer will adhere but the surface texture makes fine details look rough. For these substrates, screen printing or embroidery is a better call.
